What Text Colors Work with Blurred Backgrounds? Color Combinations for Readability in Web Design

TIPS

When text is placed over a blurred background, fine image details may become less noticeable, but the difference between bright and dark areas does not disappear. In this article, “blurred background” includes both images that have been blurred and surfaces that use CSS backdrop-filter to blur what is behind an element. The basic rule is to choose text color according to the actual brightness directly behind the text, not simply according to whether the background has been blurred.

Use dark text on light blur, white text on dark blur, and create a text surface when brightness is mixed

On a light blurred surface, a dark charcoal such as ■#20252B is a practical body-text choice. On a dark blurred surface, white ■#FFFFFF is a candidate. However, photos and video backgrounds can vary in brightness from one position to another, so “mostly light” or “mostly dark” is not enough by itself to establish safe contrast.

CSS backdrop-filter applies visual effects such as blur to the area behind an element. To see that effect, the element’s background needs to be transparent or partially transparent. Because a semi-transparent surface is composited with whatever sits behind it, the final background color changes with the image. That means the declared panel color and text color alone do not determine the real contrast ratio. If light and dark areas are mixed, an opaque surface behind the text makes the pair easier to verify.

Three color approaches for keeping text readable

1. Use dark text on a light blurred panel

For a light card, use charcoal ■#20252B for body text and headings, with a light semi-transparent panel behind it.

.blur-card {
  color: rgb(32 37 43);
  background: rgb(247 249 251 / 84%);
  backdrop-filter: blur(16px);
}

The real contrast of this translucent panel still depends on the image behind it, so it must be checked in the rendered design. If you need a stable text surface, use an opaque off-white ■#F7F9FB directly behind the text. Its contrast ratio—the relative brightness difference between foreground and background colors—with charcoal ■#20252B is about 14.62:1.

2. Use white text on a dark blur, and support it with an opaque dark surface when needed

On blurred night scenes or other dark images, white ■#FFFFFF is a natural text candidate. Bright lamps, sky, or reflections can still reduce contrast in parts of the image. When that happens, place an opaque dark blue-gray ■#26313B behind the text. Its contrast ratio with white is about 13.25:1. Separating the decorative blur from the text surface makes readability more predictable.

3. Keep buttons and links visually separate from the blurred image

If a primary button uses blue ■#315F78 with white text ■#FFFFFF, their contrast ratio is about 6.91:1. The same blue used as link text on an opaque off-white ■#F7F9FB surface has a ratio of about 6.55:1. Keeping interactive elements on their own clear surfaces or colors makes them easier to evaluate than letting them depend directly on the brightness of a photo.

Blur does not guarantee contrast, so check the weakest part of the background

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.2 requires at least 4.5:1 contrast for normal-size text. Blur can smooth background detail, but it does not automatically create enough light-dark separation between text and its background. Cropping and responsive layout changes can also move a different part of the image behind the text, so check the location with the lowest contrast at the main display widths you support.

If the background varies too much to keep text readable in every position, move the text outside the image or add an opaque text surface. In HueRoll, you can enter a six-digit HEX code, review related colors and palette suggestions, and compare the selected color with white or black. HueRoll does not evaluate every position of a blurred photo, compare arbitrary custom color pairs, or automatically determine WCAG AA or AAA conformance, so text on a real blurred background still needs separate checking.
